The Fasnia Council has issued an order this morning (Thursday) for restrictions on water use due to the low level of reserves. The mayor, Javier González, says the municipality needs to address the climatic situation that has affected the Canary Islands in recent months, with the primary objective of ensuring the supply of drinking water to all inhabitants.
Tenerife has experienced record-breaking high temperatures and low precipitation for the last six months, which has left reservoirs at just 33% full instead of the usual 72% for this time of year, and the island facing a situation of “extreme drought”.
Among the measures the Fasnia council has imposed is the prohibition on washing vehicles, with the exception of at service stations, as well as the filling of swimming pools, ponds, or tanks. In addition, the use of showers on beaches is prohibited and it is urged not to use drinking water for irrigation.
The Tenerife Cabildo plans to formally declare a water emergency tomorrow (Friday) to initiate the procedures to declare a possible water emergency and to study additional measures to guarantee the supply of water to the population.
