A tourist has been photographed walking through a protected section of the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve in Gran Canaria, blatantly disregarding the clear signage and regulations that prohibit access beyond designated trails.

The woman was seen near the edge of La Charca de Maspalomas, a shallow lagoon that plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem. Her actions breached strict conservation rules designed to safeguard this fragile landscape, where visitors are permitted only on marked paths to prevent damage to the dunes and surrounding habitats.

The Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve covers approximately 404 hectares of shifting sand dunes and wetlands, making it one of the most iconic natural spaces in the Canary Islands. Among its most important areas is La Charca, a natural lagoon that serves as a vital refuge for numerous bird species, some of which are protected under both regional and national conservation legislation.

Tourism and environmental authorities have repeatedly warned that straying from marked paths can seriously endanger the area’s wildlife. The dunes and lagoon are home to rare and protected species of plants, birds, and insects — including unique sand-dwelling insects found nowhere else on the planet.

This not only makes the reserve an environmental treasure but also a site of considerable scientific interest. However, the growing number of visitors is putting increased pressure on efforts to protect and preserve the area.

Even seemingly harmless actions, such as walking off the trails, moving stones, or ignoring posted signs, can disrupt the delicate ecological balance and pose significant risks to local flora and fauna.

To help safeguard this natural wonder, the Gran Canaria Cabildo and the local council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana have implemented a comprehensive conservation plan, aiming to ensure people can enjoy the area responsibly. Visitors are strongly encouraged to adhere to the guidelines: stick to marked paths, respect signage, avoid disturbing wildlife, and refrain from altering the landscape in any way, including stacking stones or camping.

By following these simple rules, both residents and tourists can help preserve the unique beauty and biodiversity of the Maspalomas Dunes for generations to come.
