Two people have died and a five-year-old child has been taken to hospital following a serious multi-vehicle collision involving three cars and a bus in the south of Lanzarote. The tragic accident occurred on the LZ-2 road in the municipality of Yaiza last night (Thursday), prompting a major emergency response.

Emergency services were alerted at 7:35pm when the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles on the busy route.

Two Occupants Died at the Scene

The Canary Islands Emergency Service dispatched two basic life support ambulances and one advanced life support ambulance to the scene.

Upon arrival, medical personnel confirmed the deaths of a man and a woman who had been travelling in the same vehicle. According to emergency services, both suffered injuries of such severity that they were incompatible with life.

Firefighters Freed Trapped Victims

Firefighters from the Lanzarote Emergency and Fire Service were called in to secure the accident scene and stabilise the damaged vehicles.

Due to the force of the collision, several occupants became trapped inside one of the vehicles. Fire crews carried out specialist extrication operations to free those trapped within the wreckage.

Five-Year-Old Child Taken to Hospital

Emergency crews also treated a five-year-old child who suffered a moderate elbow injury in the crash.

After receiving initial treatment at the scene, the youngster was transported by medicalised ambulance to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa for further assessment and treatment.

Investigation Underway

Officers from the Local Police and the Guardia Civil attended the incident. The Guardia Civil managed traffic on the LZ-2, where significant delays developed following the collision, and has launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances and cause of the crash.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been released.

The incident is the latest reminder of the importance of road safety on the Canary Islands' road network, particularly on busy interurban routes where traffic volumes can be high.
