The wind and intense haze causes more delays at Canary Islands airports

The strong wind and intense haze that is affecting the Canary Islands have caused delays and have affected the operation of airports in the archipelago due to a lack of visibility, as reported by AENA and the airlines themselves.

The two most affected are the Los rodeos airport in the north of Tenerife and the Las Palmas airport in Gran Canaria, which have particularly suffered from strong cross winds and intense haze.

The Tenerife North airport registered winds over 70km/h yesterday and none less than 55km/h since 6:00 in the morning, and Las Palmas struggled with visibility from the haze as the day progressed, starting with a horizontal visibility of 3,700 metres which reduced to 1,500 metres, which made it the most affected airport on the islands.

In addition, the average cloudiness has masked the mineral dust from the Sahara, as explained by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), who forecast that the intensity of the haze will drop today (Wednesday) but light haze will remain until the end of the year.

Both of these airports suffered delays and diversions due to aborted landings, and additionally, some inter-island flights were cancelled due to the conditions, particularly to Tenerife North.

You are advised to check the status of your flight before travelling, regardless of whether it is domestic or international, and are reminded that you must still check in at the airport at the normal time even if you have a delay.
