The Canary Islands had 52,286 holiday let properties in November, 4,500 more than in February

As of November 2024, there were 52,286 holiday homes being rented to tourists in the Canary Islands, which is just 111 more than in August last year but 4,502 more (+9.6%) than in February, according to the latest experimental data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on holiday rental properties.

By province, there were 27,217 registered in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which is 2,147 more than in the month of February; and 24,060 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is 2,355 more than in the second month of the year.

Meanwhile, in Spain as a whole, in November there were 368,295 registered holiday rental properties, which is 28,588 fewer than in August last year (-7.2%) but 16,906 more (+4.8%) than in February.

The main objective of these experimental statistics from the INE is to estimate the actual number of holiday rental properties in Spain, not just the registered ones, as well as their capacity to respond to the demand for information on this subject.

To obtain this information, the INE uses the 'web scraping' technique, which uses software programs to extract data from the three most widely used tourist accommodation platforms in Spain.

Regarding the extracted accommodations, the tourist homes are first selected in accordance with the regulations on this matter in each region, and then, those homes present in more than one platform are eliminated using an algorithm that eliminates duplicates.

The data for this experimental statistic were published every six months (in August and February), but the INE will now publish them every three months, so this is the first time that data has been published for the month of November.

The 368,295 tourist homes counted by Statistics in November offered 1,857,710 beds for holidaymakers, which is 6.9% less than in August 2024, the previous available data, but 6.1% more than in February. Thus, each home offered an average of 5 places in November, a figure very similar to that of August and February.

Of the total number of dwellings, tourist accommodation represented 1.38% last November, a percentage that has decreased compared to August (1.5%) but is slightly higher than in February last year (1.33%).

Alicante and Málaga, provinces with the most tourist housing

According to Statistics, Alicante led the number of tourist accommodation in November, with 41,179, closely followed by Malaga, with 41,039.

Next, but further behind, were Las Palmas, with 27,217 tourist homes; the Balearic Islands (24,190); Tenerife (24,069) and Madrid (20,760).

At the other end of the spectrum, with the lowest number of tourist homes at the end of November, were Palencia (234), Álava (389), Soria (531), Zamora (558), Valladolid (646) and Badajoz (661).

By municipalities, those that registered the most tourist homes in November were Madrid (17,274), Barcelona (9,750), Malaga (7,496), Valencia (7,290), Marbella (6,881), Seville (6,240), Torrevieja (5,140), Arona (4,442), Adeje (4,215) and Mijas (4,146).
