47-year-old man dies after drowning at Las Canteras Beach

A 47-year-old man has tragically drowned after being pulled unconscious from the sea at La Cícer on Las Canteras Beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria this morning, Wednesday, 25th June.

The incident occurred shortly before midday, when surfers spotted the man floating motionless in the water and quickly pulled him ashore. Emergency services were immediately alerted via the emergency line 1-1-2.

Upon arrival, medical staff from the Canary Islands Emergency Services (SUC) found the victim already in cardiac arrest. Despite prolonged efforts to revive him using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the medical team was unable to stabilise him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local authorities have confirmed, through CCTV footage of the area, that the man entered the beach and the sea unaccompanied, without interacting with anyone before the incident. This information has led investigators to initially rule out foul play or any sort of altercation preceding the tragedy.

La Cícer, located at the southern end of Las Canteras Beach, is known for being a highly popular destination among surfers and watersports enthusiasts. However, the strong currents and frequently unpredictable waves pose risks for swimmers, prompting regular safety reminders from local officials. Beachgoers are encouraged to swim in lifeguard-monitored zones and to pay close attention to weather and sea conditions.

Authorities continue their investigations into the exact circumstances of this incident, with further details expected as the inquiry progresses.
