Tenerife activates the Island’s Emergency Plan in preparation of Tropical Storm Hermine

The Tenerife Cabildo activated the Insular Emergency Plan (PEIN) yesterday afternoon, after the declaration of maximum alert for rain, wind, and storms with the risk of flooding, issued by the Government's Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Canary Islands, which is in force from 00:00H today (Saturday 24th September), and which will, in all likelihood, last until Monday.

"This activation in a preventive manner is carried out to ensure the safety of the public, taking into account the level of prevention that will go hand in hand with the declaration of maximum alert in the Canary Islands, and I have transferred it to the municipalities so that from the same way they activate their municipal emergency plans (PEMU)”, said the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín.

In addition, he said that "the Department of Security, with the availability of their BRIFOR teams, Environment agents, CECOPIN, the Firefighters Consortium, and Highway personnel, are working to coordinate all available means on the island to act immediately in case of emergency.”

The activation of the PEIN involves protection measures such as the suspension of outdoor activities, as well as the revocation of previously issued authorizations to carry them out, the closure of camping and recreational areas, guided tourist activities, and outdoor sports activities.

Likewise, among the recommendations, the population is told to avoid long journeys and going out if not necessary. These measures will be maintained while the Insular Plan is activated.

ROADS:
The Department of Roads has dispatched work crews throughout the island, with more than 125 workers to act in case of landslides, accidents, blocked drains, and flooding, leaving the rest of the staff available to attend to other incidents as they happen.

They will work hand in hand with the Highway Information Centre (CIC) who monitors the island's roads on more than 200 cameras.

BUS SERVICE:
Titsa will operate its services following its usual weekend schedule. These can be consulted on the website www.titsa.com, in the Titsa app, and on its social media pages. In the event of incidents or changes, users will be informed as soon as possible through these channels.

All the interchanges and main stations in which the company operates have generators to guarantee the safety of users and passengers, as well as the maximum possible operation of the service.

Likewise, Titsa maintains a maintenance team on alert in the event of damage to some infrastructures, together with security personnel, refuelling, and recovery services.

As forecast, light rain started in Tenerife during the night which is expected to intensify by this afternoon.
