National Police officers successfully prevented a young man from jumping from a bridge on the TF-13 in Tejina in the south of Tenerife earlier today, in a high-risk incident that could have quite easily ended in tragedy.
The dramatic rescue unfolded after a woman in Tejina alerted the emergency services. She reported receiving alarming messages from her partner, in which he clearly expressed his intention to take his own life. Given the seriousness of the situation, a search operation was launched immediately.
Urgent search operation
Once on the scene, officers remained in close contact with the woman while working alongside the man’s family and friends to trace his mobile phone. This led to an extensive search of the roadside and the rough tracks beneath the bridge’s structure.
The breakthrough came thanks to a passer-by who was walking nearby and helped pinpoint his location. The young man was found in a hard-to-reach spot between the bridge and the ravine wall, sitting in an extremely dangerous position around 30 metres above the ground.
Tense rescue
With the man visibly distressed, officers adopted a calm and measured approach. They brought in one of his friends to speak with him directly, helping to ease tensions and buy crucial time.
After several tense minutes, officers seized a brief moment of distraction. Acting swiftly, they moved in and safely restrained him, preventing him from falling.
Once the area was secured, the man was brought back onto the road, where paramedics were waiting. After an initial assessment, he was taken to Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria for specialist care.
This successful intervention highlights the vital role of public cooperation and the swift coordination between emergency services in resolving a life-threatening situation in Tenerife.
