The public transport operator in Gran Canaria, Guaguas Municipales, have announced they will implement minimum services during the nationwide transportation strike scheduled from midnight last night, Thursday 28th November, to 11:59pm tomorrow night, Friday 29th November.
The measures have been mandated by the Gran Canaria Unified Transportation Authority (AUTGC) to ensure essential mobility for residents and visitors during the disruption, with similar situations and measures implemented accordingly in the other islands.
The AUTGC resolution, issued on October 25th, requires that services operate as they would on a public holiday during the strike. This means at least 184 of the usual 368 drivers will be on duty. The strike coincides with Black Friday, a key shopping day marking the start of the holiday retail season, stressing the importance of maintaining transport services.
Special Operations During the Strike
Guaguas Municipales has prepared a special timetable for the strike period. All regular daytime lines and the three nighttime services will operate, with the exception of Line 18, which will be suspended.
The detailed schedule is available on the company’s website under the “Minimum Services” section, where customers can also find answers to frequently asked questions and updates about the planned strikes.
Context of the Strike
The strike, led by the CCOO union, follows a previous work stoppage on October 28th and an additional strike day postponed on November 11th due to extreme weather in Valencia.
While other unions have stepped back from the current action, CCOO remains committed, announcing further strike dates on December 5th and 9th, with an indefinite strike planned from December 23rd if an agreement is not reached.
Last-minute negotiations between transportation companies and unions remain a possibility. Guaguas Municipales has indicated it will monitor discussions for any developments that could lead to the cancellation of the strike and the resumption of normal services.
