A 60-year-old man was injured yesterday evening (Thursday) after falling into a pit around three metres deep in Playa Blanca, in the south of Lanzarote. The incident took place on Calle Suiza, in the Shangrila residential area of the popular tourist resort.

After the alert was raised, the Canary Islands’ Emergency Coordination and Security Centre (CECOES) activated several emergency resources, including Local Police officers, firefighters, and two ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC).

When emergency crews arrived, they found the man complaining of severe pain in his hip after the fall. Firefighters put him on a specialist rescue stretcher designed for confined-space operations. With the assistance of healthcare staff and the Local Police, he was then carefully lifted out of the pit and brought safely to street level.

Once rescued, he was placed on a vacuum mattress to prevent further injury and transported by ambulance to the Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa for further medical assessment and treatment.

The circumstances surrounding how the man fell into the pit have not been made public.
