CD Tenerife continued their excellent start to the season with a 2-0 victory over CD Leganés, as 40-year-old Enric Gallego scored both goals at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López.

Gallego opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 25th minute before adding his second in the 74th, taking his personal tally to four goals in the opening five league matches.

His performance was particularly noteworthy given the striker lining up for the opposition. Former Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, Juventus and Spain forward Álvaro Morata started for Leganés but was unable to make an impact and was substituted shortly before Gallego's second goal.

The victory leaves newly promoted Tenerife with ten points from their first five matches, an encouraging return following last season's promotion.

Just as importantly, supporters have returned in numbers. An official attendance of 16,723 watched the Leganés victory, continuing the renewed connection between the team and fans at the Heliodoro.

Despite a significant summer rebuild, manager Álvaro Cervera has retained much of the side that won promotion. Ten of the eleven players who started against Leganés were part of last season's squad, with Víctor Moreno the only new arrival in the starting line-up.

Tough test against Castellón

Tenerife now travel to CD Castellón, the only unbeaten team remaining in the division after five matches.

Castalia has traditionally been a difficult ground for Tenerife, who have won only four of their 27 official visits there.

The fixture also highlights one of the additional challenges facing Canary Islands clubs. Cervera has recently criticised the late scheduling of matches in Spanish football, arguing that it creates particular logistical difficulties for a team dependent on flights for every mainland away fixture.

On the pitch, however, Tenerife have given supporters plenty of reasons for optimism. Their next test against Castellón should provide another useful measure of how successfully they have adapted to life back in the Second Division.
