Tenerife South Airport back operating as normal after runway cleared

UPDATE...
The main runway is back open at Tenerife South Airport and operating as normal after being blocked by a private jet that experienced technical problems on landing and needed to be moved before other flights could take off or land.

Over 20 incoming flights were diverted to Tenerife North, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote airports causing disruption and delays for passengers travelling to the island.

Air Traffic Controllers have reported on X that everything is now functioning as normal and the 'back log' of flights delayed has been resolved.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE...
Travellers heading to or departing from Tenerife South Airport (TFS) are experiencing significant disruptions because a private jet is blocking the airport's runway.

The unexpected incident has forced multiple flights to be diverted to alternative airports across the Canary Islands and mainland Spain, causing widespread delays and frustration for passengers.

Shortly after landing, the private jet reportedly encountered technical difficulties that left it immobilised on the runway. Initial reports suggest a possible landing gear malfunction, but authorities have not yet confirmed the cause. Airport operations teams were quickly dispatched to assess the situation, but the aircraft could not be immediately removed.

Efforts to tow the jet away have been complicated by its position on the runway and the need for specialised equipment. The incident has rendered the runway unusable, effectively halting all take-offs and landings at Tenerife South Airport.

Impact on Flights

With Tenerife South Airport serving as a major hub for tourists visiting the island, the disruption has had a cascading effect on air traffic:

  • Inbound Flights Diverted: Flights scheduled to land at TFS have been rerouted to Tenerife North Airport (TFN) and Gran Canaria (LPA)
  • Outbound Flights Delayed: Passengers scheduled to depart from Tenerife South are facing extended delays, with airlines struggling to coordinate alternative arrangements.
  • Passengers Stranded: Many travellers are stranded at alternate airports or within the terminal at Tenerife South, where they await updates from airlines.

Response from Authorities

The airport authority, AENA, has issued a statement apologising for the disruption and assured travellers that efforts are underway to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. "The safety of passengers and crew is our top priority," the statement read. "We are working diligently with our partners to tow the aircraft and restore normal operations."

Airlines have also been communicating with passengers, offering updates on rebooking options and alternative transportation where feasible.

When Will Normal Operations Resume?

Airport officials have not provided an exact timeline for reopening the runway. The removal of the private jet is expected to take several more hours, depending on the availability of the necessary towing equipment and personnel. Once cleared, the runway will need to be inspected for damage before it can be declared safe for use.

What Travellers Should Do

Passengers travelling to or from Tenerife South Airport are advised to:

1.    Check Flight Status: Regularly monitor airline notifications and flight status updates.

2.    Contact Airlines Directly: For rebooking or alternative travel arrangements, reach out to airlines as soon as possible.

3.    Be Patient: Expect delays as the situation unfolds, and plan for possible overnight stays if flights are significantly delayed or diverted.

While such incidents are rare, they highlight the challenges airports face when unforeseen technical issues arise. Passengers are reminded to stay informed and prepared for ongoing disruptions.
