The Canary Islands are facing another hot and hazy day today (Sunday), as the calima continues to affect the archipelago and temperatures climb well into the 30s.

According to the latest forecast from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the highest temperatures are expected in Gran Canaria, where it could reach 37°C in inland areas on the western, southern and eastern sides of the island.

Night-time temperatures will also remain particularly high in these areas, barely dropping below 26°C to 28°C, making for another uncomfortable night.

Tenerife could reach 34°C
In Tenerife, conditions will be mostly clear, although some low cloud is expected across northern parts of the island.

A light calima will remain at higher altitudes, while temperatures will generally remain similar or rise slightly on southern and eastern slopes.

AEMET says temperatures could locally reach 34°C, particularly in lower areas of the municipalities of Candelaria and El Rosario.

Trade winds will strengthen during the afternoon, particularly along the southeast coast, the far northwest and the southern side of the Anaga massif. Locally very strong gusts cannot be ruled out.

General temperature range: Low of 24°C and a high of 31°C.

Gran Canaria faces the highest temperatures
Gran Canaria will see some low cloud in the north, while central and high cloud is expected elsewhere before conditions become clearer during the afternoon.

A light calima will be more noticeable in the mid-altitude areas and mountains.

Temperatures could reach 37°C in inland areas of the west, south and east, while overnight temperatures in these locations are expected to remain between 26°C and 28°C.

Strong trade winds are also expected on the southeast and northwest slopes during the afternoon, with occasional very strong gusts possible.

General temperature range: Low of 24°C and a high of 30°C.

Calima continues in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura
Both Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will continue to experience calima, accompanied by a mixture of medium and high cloud.

In Lanzarote, low cloud will be more prevalent in the north, while temperatures will remain largely unchanged.

Strong trade winds are expected at times, with the possibility of locally very strong gusts across the southern half of the island during the afternoon.

General temperature range: Low of 24°C and a high of 29°C.

Similar conditions are forecast for Fuerteventura, where the island will also see temperatures between 24°C and 29°C.

Strong winds could affect the southern half of the island, particularly the southern side of the Jandía peninsula.

Strong winds and rougher seas

Conditions at sea are also expected to become more unsettled in exposed areas.

North to northeast winds will generally reach force 4 or 5, strengthening to force 6 or 7 off the northwest and southeast coasts. Moderate seas are forecast to become rougher offshore in these areas.

A northerly swell of around one metre is also expected.

With high temperatures, calima and strong winds affecting parts of the islands, residents and visitors are advised to take extra care in the heat, particularly during the warmest part of the day.
