First dog-friendly beach to open in Costa Teguise

The first beach where dogs and their owners can enjoy the sea together is set to open in Costa Teguise, after the Cabildo approved changes to local regulations.

They voted to amend the 2012 rules, which had previously banned dogs from all beaches in the area.

The move will allow a dedicated section of Playa Bastián to be set aside where dogs can walk, swim, and relax alongside their owners, under specific rules designed to protect the environment and ensure public safety.

The new dog-friendly area is the result of a joint effort between the departments of Tourism, Beaches, and Animal Welfare.

“We’re delighted to offer this long-requested space to both residents and visitors,” said Tourism and Beaches Councillor Rita Hernández. “Being able to spend a day at the beach with your dog was something people asked for, and we’ve listened. This makes Teguise a more inclusive and modern destination.”

She also pointed out that the move would help attract more visitors. “Many families now travel with their pets. Offering them a safe space to enjoy the sea adds real value for tourism in Teguise.”

Animal Welfare Councillor, Ginés González, said the beach will be fully equipped to ensure responsible use. “There will be clear signage, facilities to help owners clean up after their pets, and regular maintenance. It’s important that dogs are always kept under control, and some breeds will still be required to wear muzzles for everyone’s safety,” he explained. “This is about improving animal welfare while ensuring everyone can enjoy the space together.”

The new law comes after a public consultation earlier this year, where locals had the chance to share their views through the Cabildo’s Transparency Portal. The next stage is to draw up technical plans and start work on adapting the beach, with the funding for the project already secured.
