An elderly woman in Lanzarote returned to her home to find a couple of strangers sitting on her sofa watching television, after they had allegedly broken into the property while she was away.
Local Police in Tías arrested the pair on 28th December on suspicion of trespassing in an occupied home, after they claimed they had entered the house because they had nowhere else to go and could not stay on the street.
The incident took place on Camino Los Lirios, where officers detained a 22-year-old man, identified as J.C.C., and a 20-year-old pregnant woman, Y.A.N. According to police sources, the property belongs to a 92-year-old woman who had spent the previous night at her daughter’s home.
When the elderly woman returned, accompanied by her daughter, they were shocked to discover an unknown man inside the house, sitting in the living room and watching television. Police were immediately alerted and went straight to the property.
Officers found that the man was not alone, but accompanied by a pregnant woman. Both told police they had entered the property because they had nowhere to stay and could not sleep rough.
Police explained to the couple that the house was clearly inhabited, pointing out that the resident’s clothes, food and personal hygiene items were all present inside.
The couple were asked to leave the property voluntarily. While the woman complied and even urged her companion to leave as well, the man refused to do so.
As a result, officers proceeded with the arrest and carried out a search of the backpack the pair had with them. Inside, police found a drill, three lock cylinders, a metal crowbar and various other tools, which are believed to have been used to force entry through a window.
Both suspects were arrested on suspicion of trespassing in an occupied dwelling, and the case has been passed to the judicial authorities.
