Covid update: The Canaries add 2,511 new cases and 10 deaths this Sunday

The Ministry of Health has notified of 2,511 new cases of coronavirus in the Canary Islands this afternoon, as well as 10 more Covid related deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases in the Islands is now 221,794 with 86,663 still active, of which 79 are admitted to ICU and 511 remain hospitalized.

Of the ten people that have lost their lives, 7 were in Tenerife, 2 in Gran Canaria, and 1 in Lanzarote, pending validation by the General Directorate of Public Health.

Regarding the new cases by Islands, Tenerife has registered 1,312 new infections; Gran Canaria 687; Lanzarote 173; Fuerteventura 157; La Palma 156;, El Hierro 17, and La Gomera 9.

The Canary Islands have the lowest fatality rate from COVID in Spain:
Regarding the mortality rate, which is calculated as a percentage of deaths from Covid per thousand cases, the average for Spain is currently 1.92. The region with the highest fatality rate in Spain is Castilla-La Mancha at 3.25, which is almost six times the lowest one, which is that of the Canary Islands at 0.56.

In total, ten regions have a Covid mortality rate above the national average, with the top 3 being: Castilla-La Mancha (3.52), Castilla y León (3'20), and Aragón (3'16).

However, there are seven regions below the national average, with the 3 lowest being the Canary Islands (0.56), the Balearic Islands (0.89), and Galicia (1.05).
