The Local Police have intensified monitoring efforts following a noticeable increase in the number of people camping on Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. This surge has prompted authorities to remind the public that camping in this iconic location is strictly prohibited.
There has been a growing number of people setting up tents and other camping structures over the last few weeks, particularly in areas near the renowned sand nativity scene that draws crowds during the festive season.
Despite municipal regulations that explicitly ban camping on beaches and in unauthorised public spaces, the trend persists, raising concerns among residents and officials alike.
Las Canteras Beach, one of Gran Canaria's most popular tourist destinations, is classified as a protected area. This status means the prohibition of activities such as camping or prolonged stays that could harm the environment.
Nonetheless, several reports from locals and visitors have highlighted the presence of these unauthorised campsites, especially during the Christmas period.
In response to these developments, the Local Police have stepped up their patrols in and around the beach. Offenders who violate the camping ban are being fined. “Las Canteras is a protected area. Camping or erecting structures in the area is strictly forbidden, and we will continue enforcing measures to ensure its preservation and adherence to current regulations,” stated a spokesperson for the police.
Officials have called on the public to act conscientiously to safeguard one of Las Palmas’ most cherished landmarks and urges residents and visitors to report any illegal activities. Authorities emphasised that there are designated and regulated camping areas elsewhere on the island where people can enjoy nature responsibly.
