A 32-year-old care worker has been arrested in Gran Canaria after allegedly stealing jewellery worth more than €10,000 from a family home in Santa María de Guía.
According to the Guardia Civil, the woman, originally from Seville, is suspected of taking gold jewellery from the property over an extended period after gaining the trust of the people she was caring for and their relatives.
The investigation began in April after family members reported the gradual disappearance of several valuable items from the home. As suspicions grew, attention turned to the care worker, who had regular access to the property and was able to move freely throughout the house.
Investigators believe the thefts may have been taking place since 2025 without immediately raising concerns. The jewellery is estimated to be worth more than €10,000, although the true value could be much higher when factors such as age, craftsmanship and sentimental value are taken into account.
During the investigation, officers uncovered 34 separate transactions linked to the sale of jewellery. The items were allegedly sold to various businesses for amounts well below their actual value.
Only part of the stolen jewellery has been recovered, as much of it could no longer be traced due to the time that had passed since the sales took place. The recovered pieces were later identified by the owner as belonging to the missing collection.
After gathering sufficient evidence, the Guardia Civil arrested the suspect on suspicion of theft. The case file has now been passed to the relevant judicial authorities through the territorial court section in Guía.
