2.5 magnitude earthquake recorded off the south coast of Gran Canaria

A seismic event with a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale was recorded by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) off the south coast of Gran Canaria on Tuesday, in the municipality of Mogán.

According to information provided by the IGN website, the tremor occurred at 1:57pm at a depth of approximately 35 kilometres not far off the south coast of the island,

Just over an hour earlier, another earthquake was recorded in Gáldar, which is in the north of the island. This one occurred at 12:14pm and was only one kilometre deep. However, the magnitude of this tremor was lower and measured at 1.7 on the Richter scale.

The IGN says that there are no reports of either earthquake being felt by the island’s population.
