Tenerife will go to Level 4 if infections do not go down the next few days

The President of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, has said this morning (Monday), that "logic" points to the fact that if coronavirus infections continue to rise on the island of Tenerife, the island will move to level 4 restrictions, as the incidence rates are currently at 184.47 over 7 days and 336.20 over 14 days.

In an interview with COPE earlier, he clarified that the data from today, Tuesday and Wednesday "is key to check if the measures adopted are giving the correct results to be able to contain, along with vaccination, the spread of the pandemic.” In this sense, he stated that they need to see the evolution of the five-day figures and verify that they are "better than previously."

He also said he hopes that the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) will approve the 'curfew' proposed by the regional government for Tenerife in light of the evolution of the pandemic on the island, since they have stressed that "it is to prevent crowds at night, especially at weekends."

Because of this he said is confident that the TSJC will give a positive response and recognise that "it is well justified." However, he assured that the regional government "does not" plan to request a state of alarm from the central government, since they consider it "incompatible with economic activity.”

Torres went on to call for the responsibility of young people in the face of the pandemic, since they are currently the part of the population that are being infected more than others.

Even so, the fifth wave, he clarified, is worldwide and with "similar circumstances" in the countries of Europe, but he stressed that the parameters have changed compared to last year, because with the current figures, a year ago it would lead to confinement.

Finally, he pointed out that the objective of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) continues to be to have 70% of the target population fully vaccinated before the end of summer, stating that they are on target to reach this by July 31st.
