Tenerife to host national final of the First Lego League in June

The vice president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Enrique Arriaga, and the president of the Scientia Foundation, Ricard Huguet, signed an agreement yesterday (Monday) to organize and host the Grand National final of First Lego League 2021, which will take place on June 26th and 27th in virtual format.

The agreement for the event, which has a budget of 180,000 euros, also includes the celebration of the First Lego League Canarias on May 8th, and support for the 'Girls First' program, and to promote 'Steam' a program aimed at girls from 4 to 18 years old, Enrique Arriaga explained at a press conference yesterday afternoon.

The project will also be used as a platform to launch the 'Steam digital' program, which will enable the training of 300 teachers and more than 1,000 students from public educational centres.

“First Lego League is a very consolidated project in Tenerife, and now we want to take a very ambitious, courageous and pioneering step forward”, added Ricard Huguet.

The Grand National final, which is to be held virtually, will host the 85 best teams, of the 2,000 existing ones, from all over Spain with a total of 800 participants, and the organization will try to ensure that all judges and referees from Spain are physically present in Tenerife, and that through various rounds they assess and evaluate the projects.

On this occasion, the challenge will revolve around sports activity, "and on how sport can make us better people or make our community better," explained the president of the Scientia Foundation, adding that last year Tenerife was the only place in the world, “out of 124 countries”, capable of organizing a national final in virtual format, and that a team from the island was proclaimed world champions in 2020.
