Tenerife foresees a ‘notable drop’ in British tourism but believes that it won’t ruin the winter

The president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Pedro Martín, has admitted that the decision of the UK to ask all travellers who arrive in England for a negative test result for Covid-19 will mean a "notable drop" in holiday reservations, but he believes that it will not ruin the winter season for the island, as those who want to come to the island, will.

During an interview with 'Cope Canarias' he said that this measure "is going to complicate peoples decisions on whether to travel or not" because it creates "discomfort for travelers” to the point that many tourists consider staying at home.

Martín emphasized that "it has not been easy to restart the tourist activity on the island” but said that he understands that the situation in the United Kingdom "is not the best" which has forced them, and Spain, to "take more restrictive measures".

The Tenerife president added that before December 15th they will do a ‘reservations check’ to quantify the losses due to new restrictions so far, and confirmed that next Thursday he will meet with the mayors of the island to assess the health situation in light of the rise in coronavirus infections.

He also said that the TSJC endorsing the voluntary use of the Covid certificate "is a step forward" and that now it is time to wait for the collaboration of the business sector so that everyone is in a safer environment, underlining that it gives "peace of mind" to customers to know others in venues are vaccinated or have a recovery certificate.
