Santa Cruz bar closed and fined after ‘Carnival party’

The Department of Urban Planning of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has closed ‘Bar La Guiri' in Calle Clavel, which starred in a video that went viral showing a carnival party, with revellers skipping all sanitary measures. The bar already had an ‘open file’ for other sanctions during this period, and in addition, has received a fine of 20,000 euros.

The bar was the scene of an extraordinary scene at this moment in time during a global pandemic, where on Friday, the day new restrictions were implemented specifically to prevent these gatherings, customers celebrated carnival singing, dancing, without masks, without distancing, and of course, with a high risk of contagion.

The bar has several infractions from 2018 and 2019 for having live music with no licence, and others for having groups and singers on during the pandemic, and breach of closure hours due to curfew.

The older sanctions were already being processed for action, but for the authorities Friday was the final straw, so the Urban Department solved it by issuing an immediate closure order for 3 months and a 20,000 euro fine.

In statement to the press, the Councillor for Urbanism in Santa Cruz, Carlos Tarife, confirms that “we have had a history of non-compliance on Calle Clavel. This sanction should serve as an example for everyone to comply with the measures.”
