Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura stay at Level 3. Lanzarote now Level 2

The spokesman for the Canary Islands Government, Julio Pérez, appears in a press conference after the Governing Council meeting held this Wednesday, to report on the changes of Covid alert levels in force in the islands, and the extra measures to be taken for New Year.

After reviewing the latest epidemiological report of the islands, he announced that:
- Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura stay in Level 3.
- Lanzarote and El Hierro increase to Level 2.
- La Palma and La Gomera stay in Level 2.

He also announced that the same allowance of 10 people at a table at home on New Year’s Eve and New Year's Day (not in bars, restaurants, or commercial premises), will apply in the same way as it did on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. A decision for Kings Day has not yet been made.

He also confirmed the closing hours in Levels 2 (2am) and 3 (1am) and confirmed that they are waiting for ratification of an overnight curfew on the nights of December 31st and January 5th from the TSJC.

Perez said: “All the islands are at high and very high risk. We have had 4,910 cases of coronavirus today. it might seem that the average hospitalization rate is not growing too much despite the increase in infections, although this is a misleading first impression. Gran Canaria and Tenerife have a greater capacity to withstand the pressure, but we cannot afford to let it get too high as this is what leads to us making difficult decisions.”

He also added that the average age of those infected is between 20 and 30 years old, and the vast majority are unvaccinated.
