Intersindical Canaria asks that Tenerife goes to alert Level 4 this week
In the midst of a fourth wave of infections in the Canary Islands, many are considering hardening measures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. The coordinator of the Health Federation of Intersindical Canaria (the confederation of trade unions of the Canary Islands), Cati Darias, has once again asked the regional Government to move Tenerife in to alert level 4 due to the increase in the number of positive cases and other indicators.
“We must bear in mind that we have now been at level 3 for a long time, but it has made no difference as the data is not improving. We are stuck in a kind of plateau and the cumulative incidence rates have just not dropped. In addition, the numbers have begun to increase dangerously after Easter. If we want to get out of this hole we must do something drastic", declared Darias in a press conference this morning.
In addition, they have stressed that the health authorities should not give a feeling of it being ‘normal’ when the infections increase, or if there are more deaths or higher occupancy in ICUs. “It is essential to be more rigorous in complying with prevention measures to see if once and for all we can bend the curve of the pandemic. People are now getting more blasé, but we must reach acceptable figures before summer”, she said.
The Archipelago added 211 new cases of coronavirus yesterday, so the total number of people that have tested positive for the virus is now close to 50,000 since the pandemic began, while deaths are almost 700. The 7 day incidence rate for the Canary Islands (IA7) has increased by almost 25% since Easter to 72.80 yesterday.
