The Canary Islands want to impose a curfew on New Year's Eve and Kings Night

The Minister of Health of the Canary Islands Government, Blas Trujillo, has announced, at the press conference after the meeting of the Governing Council this morning, that they are requesting a curfew from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) to prohibit of mobility and movement of people on New Year’s Eve and Kings Night.

He explained that they are looking for endorsement that islands in Level 2 (La Palma and La Gomera) will have a curfew from 2am to 6am, and those in Level 3 (Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife) from 1am to 6am, in order to minimize the increase in infections due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a measure that he insisted, requires judicial ratification, and which has already been transferred to TSJC.

However, Trujillo added that a whole series of exceptions will be allowed, such as going to a health centre or home from work, among others, which will be published in the Official Boletin of the Canary Islands (BOC).

The Government has considered the adoption of these measures due to the increase in the contagion of Covid cases, but above all, they are concerned about hospital pressure, as the occupancy of hospital beds by Covid patients have increased by 260% between November 1st and December 25th, especially in Tenerife, which is above the national average.
