Covid update: 371 new cases, 144 in Gran Canaria and 121 in Lanzarote

Covid update: 371 new cases, 144 in Gran Canaria and 121 in Lanzarote

The Ministry of Health has reported of 371 new cases of coronavirus today, taking the total to 30,221 since the pandemic began, of which 7,699 are still active, and registered four Covid related deaths, all in Tenerife.

Of the new cases 144 are in Gran Canaria who’s total is now 11,760; Lanzarote registered 121 new positives and the incidence rate for the island is 279.73 over 7 days. Tenerife had 77 new cases and continues to bend the curve, although 290 people have now lost their lives on the island from the virus, and Fuerteventura continues to rise with 25 detected, and now has 181 active cases.

Tomorrow is the weekly Governing Council meeting where the alert Levels in each island will be reviewed and changed accordingly, due to their data. Luis Sierra has already announced that Tenerife will be reduced to Level 2, and La Oliva in Fuerteventura have implemented Level 3 restrictions as that municipality is the epicentre of the island.

The Cabildo de Lanzarote and the town councils have requested that Lanzarote go to Level 3, and today’s data supports that request, as it is the island with the highest incidence rates. Gran Canaria is feeling the effects of a more relaxed Christmas, particularly in Las Palmas, and will probably be raised to Level 3 also.
