Officers from Guardia Civil have been praised after rescuing a missing woman from the sea in Tenerife after she was found in the water during a night-time search operation.

The incident occurred during the early hours of September 24th in the municipality of Güímar, although details of the operation have only now been released by the Guardia Civil.

The search began after the force's Central Operational Services unit received a call from a man reporting that his wife had disappeared and that he did not know where she was.

Emergency services were alerted and patrols from Güímar, Candelaria and the Guardia Civil's Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) began searching different areas of the municipality.

Woman found outside breakwater

After carrying out several searches, officers eventually located the missing woman in the sea, outside a breakwater in Güímar. Conditions made reaching her particularly difficult.

The operation was taking place at night with poor visibility, while waves further complicated both the search and attempts to reach the woman safely.

Several Guardia Civil officers entered the water to rescue her, and  maintained communication with the woman while approaching her, reassuring and calming her until they were able to bring her to safety.

Taken to hospital for assessment

Once the woman had been helped out of the water, medical personnel treated her at the scene.

She was subsequently transferred to hospital for further assessment.

The Guardia Civil has not released further details about her condition or the circumstances that led to her entering the sea.
