Banco Santander to close 221 branches 19 of them in the Canary Islands

Banco Santander is closing 221 offices in February and March, 19 of them in the Canary Islands, according to an agreement with unions, and intends to close 1,033 branches in Spain by August, leaving the network with 2,000 outlets.

At the end of last year the group reached an agreement with the unions to reduce its workforce by 3,572 jobs, accompanied by the closure of more than a thousand branches, an adjustment that will begin next month.

In February, it is expected that 110 Banco Santander offices will no longer open to serve the public in various communities, notably Madrid, where the closure will affect 28 offices; Catalonia, with the closure of 15 branches; or Andalusia, with 14 establishments.

In the Canary Islands, 10 offices will stop opening in February, the same figure as in the territory that brings together the Valencian Community and Murcia.

In Aragón-Navarra-La Rioja the Santander network will be reduced by 8 branches in February, while in Galicia it will do so by 6; both in Castilla y León and Cantabria-Asturias, the closures will add four establishments, and three in the case of the Basque Country, Castilla La Mancha or the Balearic Islands. Extremadura will be the least affected region, with the planned closure of just 2 branches in February.

In March, the bank's plans are to close 111 more branches, with a very similar geographical distribution, so that Madrid is once again the most affected region, with the closure of 27 branches, over 12 in Catalonia o the 11 of the Valencian Community together with Murcia.

Galicia, with the closure of 10 branches, is listed below, together with the territorial area of ​​Aragón-Navarra-La Rioja, and above the Canary Islands, where the closure of another 9 branches of Banco Santander is scheduled for March.

In Andalusia, the closings in March will add 7 offices, as in Castilla y León, while in Cantabria-Asturias they will remain at 6 and in the Basque Country, at 5.

In the Balearic Islands, they will stop opening three Santander stores in March, while in Castilla La Mancha, as in Extremadura, their network of offices will be reduced to two stores.
