The alert for high winds up to 100km/h is brought forward to tonight

The General Directorate of Security and Emergencies for the Canary Islands has brought forward the alert for strong winds up to 100km/h in the Archipelago to midnight tonight. This change is based on the latest forecasts from AEMET which show that a south-southeast wind is expected on the northern and western slopes of La Gomera and in the municipalities between La Orotava and Santa Cruz in Tenerife.

Likewise, on the island of El Hierro there will also be a strong southerly wind that may exceed 100km/h on summits and in the El Golfo area.

Given this situation, a series of recommendations have been released for the safety of the population, so people are advised to:

- Close doors and windows to avoid air currents that can lead to glass breaking.

- Remove pots and all objects that could fall into the street from balconies and roof terraces.

- Check their houses so that there are no cornices, balconies and facades in poor condition that could cause rubble and debris to fall.

- Try to postpone road trips unless absolutely necessary, and take extreme precautions. The use of public transport is recommended.

- Motorcycles and large vehicles that could easily be blown over by the wind (trucks, vans, vehicles with trailers or caravans) are advised to not be used.

HOW TO ACT:
- Avoid walking through parks or wooded areas.

- Stay away from walls, old houses, scaffolding, illuminated signs, billboards and other structures that can be blown over by the wind.

- Try to stay away from the shoreline (beaches, boardwalks, piers and jetties, etc) to avoid being hit or swept away by large waves.

- Drive slowly and carefully in the presence of obstacles on the road or gusts of wind that may make you lose control of your vehicle, especially when overtaking.
