With autumn now in full swing and the days getting shorter, the Canary Islands are preparing for the switch to winter time, the second clock change of the year. This adjustment means it will get lighter and darker, earlier each day.
As in the rest of Spain, the time change will take place in the early hours of Sunday, 26th October 2025. When the clocks reach 2:00am in the Canary Islands, they must be turned back one hour to 1:00am, giving everyone an extra hour of sleep that night.
Although the winter clock change is often unpopular because evenings become darker sooner, experts point out that it offers several benefits, as it aims to make the most of daylight hours and can have positive effects on health, safety, and energy use.
Among the advantages of winter time are:
- Improved mood and productivity
- Greater visibility and reduced risk of accidents
- Energy savings
- Less fatigue and lower risk of depression
- Gradual adaptation to winter routines
- Easier start to the day with earlier daylight
For residents and visitors alike, this seasonal adjustment serves as a reminder that the Canarian winter is just around the corner, still mild, but with shorter, cosier days ahead.
