Well known sunscreens pulled from Spanish market due to microbiological contamination

The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has ordered the immediate withdrawal of several sunscreen products from the Parasol brand after detecting possible microbiological contamination that could pose a health risk to consumers.

The affected sunscreens, manufactured by French company Laboratoires DERMOSUN and distributed in Spain, including the Canary Islands, by DERMOSUN IBÉRICA, S.L., may cause irritation or infections, particularly if they come into contact with the eyes or damaged skin. AEMPS has stressed that the measure is precautionary but necessary to protect public health.

Affected products and batches

The recall applies to products sold between March 2024 and May 2025, specifically batches whose numbers begin with digits from 01 to 14 and 90 to 92. The affected products include several lines from Parasol Sensitive and Parasol Protection & Bronzage, with SPF 30, 50 and 50+:

  • Spray protecteur Sensitive 30
  • Spray protecteur Sensitive 50
  • Spray protecteur Sensitive 50+ Enfants
  • Lait protecteur Sensitive 50 Mini
  • Spray protecteur Sensitive 30 Mini
  • Spray protecteur Sensitive 50 Mini
  • Lait protecteur Sensitive 50 Enfants
  • Crème visage Sensitive 50+
  • Spray 30 Protection & Bronzage
  • Spray 50 Protection & Bronzage

Six of these products have already been confirmed as distributed across Spain, although the authorities warn that others may also be on sale due to the free circulation of goods within the European Union.

Consumers urged to check products

AEMPS advises all consumers, including both residents and visitors in the Canary Islands, to check any Parasol sunscreen products they may have purchased. The batch number can be found on the base of the packaging. If the product belongs to one of the affected batches, it should not be used.

Anyone who has purchased a product from the recalled batches should return it to the retailer where it was bought for a refund or exchange. Additionally, the distributor has provided an email address for customer enquiries: info@dermosun.es.

Retailers have also been instructed to inspect their inventory and withdraw any products belonging to the affected batches with immediate effect.

A timely reminder during peak season

This alert comes at the start of the busy summer season, when sunscreen products are in high demand. The AEMPS emphasises the importance of strict safety controls on cosmetic products, particularly sun protection, which is essential for safeguarding skin health during prolonged sun exposure.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure all necessary measures are taken to protect consumers.
