The Authorities in Gran Canaria have issued an urgent warning as the Fataga reservoir in San Bartolomé de Tirajana edges dangerously close to overflowing following heavy rainfall from Storm Therese.

Officials confirmed the reservoir is just two metres from capacity and tens of thousands of cubic metres of water could come cascading down the ravine towards residents at any moment.

Both the Cabildo and the local council have issued safety alerts and are urging residents in the community of Arteara to take extreme caution and avoid the barranco (ravine) and surrounding areas.

Local residents have also been advised to stock up on essential supplies, including food and medication, amid fears they could become temporarily cut off if water levels rise further.

Arteara sits close to the base of the Fataga ravine. Access to and from the village requires crossing the barranco, raising concerns about potential isolation if conditions worsen.

Widespread Pressure on Reservoirs

The situation is not limited to Fataga. Authorities report that 16 reservoirs across Gran Canaria are already releasing water, with five more close to doing so.

Among those nearing capacity are:

  • Cueva de Las Niñas (Tejeda), less than half a metre from overflow
  • Chamoriscán reservoir
  • Ayagaures reservoir

“Do Not Take This Lightly”

Emergency officials have stressed the seriousness of the situation, warning that ignoring safety advice could have fatal consequences.

Residents and visitors are being urged to remain vigilant, follow official guidance, and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas as the impact of Storm Therese continues across the island.
