A 27-year-old woman has been hospitalised in a serious condition following a scuba diving accident in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, according to reports from the Canary Islands Emergency Services.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon (Thursday), with the emergency coordination centre (CECOES) receiving an alert at approximately 3:50pm reporting that someone required urgent medical assistance after experiencing difficulties on a dive.

After assessing the information provided by the caller, a medical coordinator from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) dispatched an advanced life-support ambulance to the location given.

Woman showed signs of non-fatal drowning

Paramedics treated the 27-year-old at the scene, where she was reportedly showing symptoms consistent with non-fatal drowning during the initial medical assessment.

Emergency personnel stabilised her before transferring her by ambulance to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife, where she was admitted in a serious condition.

The circumstances surrounding the diving accident have not been detailed, including where the woman had been diving or exactly what happened during or immediately after the dive.

Officers from the Guardia Civil and Local Police also attended the incident, assisting emergency personnel and carrying out the necessary procedures relating to the accident.

Playa Blanca and the surrounding coastline in the south of Lanzarote are popular with both residents and tourists for scuba diving and other water-based activities throughout the year.
