The Canary Islands are set for a hot start to September, with temperatures forecast to reach 32°C today, Tuesday, and potentially climb as high as 34°C in some areas of Gran Canaria, according to latest forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Generally clear or lightly cloudy skies are expected across the Archipelago, although moderate north-easterly winds will strengthen in exposed areas, with strong or even very strong gusts possible later in the day.
Choppy conditions at sea
Anyone heading out on the water should also be aware of unsettled sea conditions, especially later this afternoon as there are weather warnings tonight for strong winds and dangerous coastal conditions.
AEMET forecasts northerly or north-easterly winds of force 4 to 6, producing moderate to rough seas around parts of the islands. There will also be a swell of between one and two metres, coming from the south in some areas and from the north in others.
Island-by-island forecast for Tuesday 1st September 2026:
Tenerife
Tenerife will see some cloud in northern areas early in the day, becoming mostly clear as the day progresses. Elsewhere, skies will be largely clear or sunny.
Temperatures will remain broadly unchanged, although maximums will rise slightly at mid-altitudes and fall slightly in higher areas.
Temperatures of around 30°C are expected in low-lying areas of southern Tenerife, as well as on the southern side of the metropolitan area.
Moderate north-easterly winds are forecast, becoming strong at times in the south-east and north-west of the island. Winds will intensify towards the end of the day, when some very strong gusts cannot be ruled out.
South-western coastal areas will benefit from local sea breezes, while moderate westerly winds are expected over the central peaks.
General temperature range: Low of 23°C and a high of 30°C.
Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria will be mostly sunny, although low cloud is expected in northern areas during the morning before clearing.
Temperatures of 30°C to 32°C are forecast in the south-east and western mid-altitude areas, with the possibility of the mercury locally reaching 34°C.
Moderate north-easterly winds will also affect the island, with strong intervals and potentially very strong gusts on the south-eastern and north-western slopes during the second half of the day.
General temperature range: Low of 23°C and a high of 29°C.
Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura will have mostly clear skies, although periods of medium and high cloud could bring a small chance of occasional light rain.
Temperatures will remain similar to recent days, although maximums will rise slightly in eastern areas. The south-east of the island could reach between 30°C and 32°C.
Moderate north-easterly winds are forecast, becoming strong at times south of Jandía. Very strong gusts are also possible, particularly towards the end of the day.
General temperature range: Low of 22°C and a high of 29°C.
Lanzarote
Lanzarote will also be mostly sunny, with some medium and high cloud and only a small chance of occasional light rainfall.
Temperatures will change little, although the south-east could reach around 30°C.
Moderate north-easterly winds are forecast, becoming strong in inland areas of the southern half of the island. Conditions are expected to become windier during the second half of the day, when some very strong gusts are possible.
General temperature range: Low of 23°C and a high of 29°C.
Overall, September is beginning with plenty of sunshine and temperatures above 30°C in several parts of the Canary Islands, but residents and visitors should be prepared for strengthening winds, particularly in exposed areas later in the day.
