Hikers planning to explore three of Teide’s mountain trails will need to book ahead and carry the required equipment under updated access rules announced by the Tenerife Cabildo.
The measures set a combined limit of 225 places a day across the Teide–Pico Viejo–Mirador de Las Narices del Teide, Los Regatones Negros and Chafarí routes.
Access to these three trails remains free, but visitors must obtain authorisation through Tenerife ON before setting out.
The announcement was made yesterday (Wednesday), and forms part of the cabildos efforts to manage visitor numbers, protect the national park and improve safety in its high mountain areas.
Which routes are affected?
The PNT 09 Teide–Pico Viejo–Mirador de Las Narices del Teide route has 95 daily places, with 70 allocated to individual walkers and 25 to accredited professionals.
Los Regatones Negros, numbered PNT 23, and Chafarí, numbered PNT 28, each have 65 places a day: 40 for individual walkers and 25 for accredited professionals.
Visitors can register and select their chosen route through the Tenerife ON website. They should be ready to show their reservation and official identification when requested.
A booking does not guarantee entry
Walkers must also have the compulsory mountain equipment, even when the weather appears settled.
The list includes long trousers, warm clothing, mountain boots, water, a charged mobile phone, an emergency thermal blanket, a hat and gloves, plus a torch or head torch with a spare battery.
Park staff can refuse access to anyone without the required equipment, even if they hold a confirmed reservation.
Routes may also close fully or partially when conditions become unsafe.
For residents and holidaymakers planning a walk, the practical advice is to check the route’s current conditions and booking requirements on Tenerife ON before travelling to the park.
