Two men were rescued yesterday afternoon (Monday) after being swept into the sea by a powerful wave in the Los Charcones area of Playa Blanca in Lanzarote. One of the men is in critical condition.

The incident occurred at around 3:50pm, according to the Lanzarote Emergency Consortium. The two men, who are Italian and live on the island, had been fishing near the coast when a sudden surge of waves struck the area.

One of them managed to get out of the water on his own, while the other, who was in serious condition, had to be rescued by helicopter. He was airlifted to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Arrecife, where he remains in critical condition.

Rough Seas Across the Canary Islands

The accident happened during a day when the Canary Islands remain under a coastal pre-alert, with forecasts of waves reaching up to four metres, particularly around high tide, which occurred at approximately 3:30pm.

The Emergency Coordination Centre (112) had warned that the alert would remain active throughout Monday for the north and west coasts of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, as well as the north of Gran Canaria.

Authorities Urge Extreme Caution

The Directorate General of Emergencies reiterated its call for residents and visitors to avoid approaching the shoreline, especially during periods of strong swell, and to stay clear of rocks, piers, and coastal paths where waves can break unexpectedly.

This latest incident follows a string of dangerous coastal accidents in recent days across the archipelago, including the tragic deaths of four people in Tenerife on Sunday after being swept away by the sea.

Emergency services continue to remind the public that the Atlantic can turn deadly without warning, and that respecting coastal safety alerts is essential to prevent further tragedies.
