The Tenerife Cabildo starts restoration work at Teide after the fire

The Tenerife Cabildo has started emergency restoration work with the goal of rehabilitating the ecosystems of Teide National Park, which were affected by the forest fire that began on August 15th. The emergency works, with a one-million-euro investment, are expected to take six months to complete.

Blanca Pérez, the Minister of Environment, explained, "These are emergency works, and concurrently with these actions, we have significant investments planned by the Cabildo in Teide National Park that will enable the recovery of summit scrubland in the coming years.”

“Last week, we approved the acquisition of new areas for plant reproduction in nurseries, so in 2024, we can begin reforesting the fenced areas with summit species."

The current activities include the installation of regeneration fences, which are essential tools to ensure the recovery of summit shrubland areas. Additionally, there will be efforts to eliminate introduced herbivores within the fenced areas to prevent their impact on future plantations.

Likewise, the removal of burnt trunks in areas near tracks and roads will take place and excavation will prepare the ground for future replanting with summit scrubland species, primarily Teide broom.

The work also involves the removal of smaller, fire-damaged pine trees and the pruning and chipping of debris to promote pine recovery and prevent pests. Furthermore, "fajinadas," structures for water retention and soil erosion prevention, will be built using some of the felled pine wood.
