The Canary Islands stay on a yellow weather warning with storms on the way

The Canary Islands are still under a yellow weather warning today for strong winds, rain, adverse sea conditions, and storms, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). This means the Islands are going from having a thick calima, and suffering the consequences of a dense haze from the Sahara, to those of an Atlantic storm without any respite, and in fact, the wind will be the only constant element in both meteorological phenomena.

The alert for high winds and gusts of 90 to 100km/h, mainly affecting the northern slopes, has raised the warning to orange in Tenerife, El Hierro, and La Gomera.

Sea conditions are going to be influenced by southeasterly winds of gale force 5, 6 and occasionally 7, producing a strong swell of 1 or 2 metres, and on the southeast coast 2 to 4 metre high waves.

The presence of Calima is also expected, which will subside with the rain, which is forecast at various strengths across the islands, except for the two most eastern islands, which will occasionally lead to storms.

WARNING FOR RAIN:
A rain warning is in effect today on all the islands except Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, for an accumulated rainfall of 50mm in Gran Canaria and 60mm in Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, and La Gomera. Storms are also expected throughout the Canary Islands except in the same two islands, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

The AEMET forecast confirms that the haze will dissipate today, starting from around 9am, as the storm that has been approaching the islands starts to prevail with its effects being felt today with moderate to heavy rainfall in the Archipelago.

More specifically, in Tenerife today it is expected to be cloudy or overcast with a sandy rain as the water mixes with the remainder of the calima, which will be heavier in some areas and will be accompanied by storm conditions, especially in the high areas of the Island which are expected to leave snow on Mount Teide.

Temperatures are expected to drop slightly, which will be more significant in inland areas, and the wind will be from the southeast, being moderate to strong at the beginning of the day. Very strong gusts, which can exceed 90-100 km/h in the early hours on the summits and on the north slope, are likely, but from midday they will decrease in intensity, except in the central peaks, where very strong gusts will persist all day.

WINDS:
The winds over the weekend, particularly last night, caused various incidents with falling trees, fences, walkways, landslides, and rubbish containers to move. These took place mainly in Tenerife, although in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria the Local Police also reported several incidents, but fortunately, there haven’t been any reported injuries due to the weather.

The alert for high winds declared by the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies in Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro, has been in place since 00:00h yesterday.
