The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued an updated and more severe weather forecast for the Canary Islands this Thursday, as Storm Claudia continues to intensify across the archipelago. Tourists and residents are advised to exercise caution, with strong winds, heavy rainfall, and thunderstorms expected throughout the day.
Aemet warns of very strong wind gusts in midland areas and exposed high-altitude zones of the mountainous islands, as well as across Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Winds will gradually shift westwards and ease along midlands and coastal areas by the end of the day.
Sea conditions are also forecast to deteriorate, with west and southwest winds reaching force 6–7, heavy swell, and a northwest swell increasing to 3–4 metres. Thunderstorms, showers, and periods of poor visibility are also predicted.
Island-by-island forecast for Thursday 13th November:
LANZAROTE:
Lanzarote will face a challenging day of weather as Storm Claudia brings widespread cloud cover and moderate, often persistent rain. The greatest risk comes during the morning and midday hours, when conditions may intensify into heavy or even very heavy thunderstorms, capable of producing sudden downpours, lightning, and brief periods of hazardous visibility—important for both drivers and those travelling between tourist resorts.
Temperatures will show little change, with minimums creeping up slightly and maximums dipping just a touch. The strongest impact will be from the wind: southwesterly winds will blow moderate to strong, and Aemet warns of very strong gusts that could affect the entire island, including La Graciosa, disrupting outdoor plans and possibly causing minor travel delays. Winds will gradually ease and shift to a moderate westerly flow by late afternoon, offering some improvement later in the day.
Expected temperatures: Low of 19°C and a high of 24°C
FUERTEVENTURA:
Fuerteventura will see conditions similar to Lanzarote, with predominantly cloudy skies and moderate rain across much of the island. The morning and midday period again carry the highest risk, with the potential for heavy or very heavy thunderstorms forming quickly and bringing intense rainfall, thunder, and gusty winds—conditions that may affect visibility on the island's major roadways and could disrupt inter-island flights or ferry services.
Temperatures will be stable, with slightly higher minimums and slightly lower maximums. Southwest winds will reach moderate to strong levels, and Aemet highlights the possibility of very strong gusts sweeping across the island from north to south, impacting both coastal and inland communities. As the afternoon progresses, winds will ease and rotate to a more moderate westerly direction, gradually calming the weather.
Expected temperatures: Low of 19°C and a high of 24°C
GRAN CANARIA:
Gran Canaria will experience one of the more unsettled forecasts within the archipelago. Skies will remain predominantly cloudy or fully overcast, bringing persistent moderate rainfall that may be stubborn in certain regions. The southwest-facing slopes and summits are at particular risk of heavy or locally very heavy thunderstorms, especially during the morning and early afternoon. These storms may lead to rapid runoff on mountain roads and could affect hiking paths or ravines popular with visitors.
Elsewhere on the island, particularly the northwest and southeast, showers will be more sporadic but still possible. A noticeable improvement is expected later in the day, with large breaks in the cloud cover appearing and rainfall easing significantly.
Wind remains a major factor: moderate to strong southwest winds will prevail throughout the day, with the potential for very strong gusts reaching 90 km/h in areas of high altitude, including summits and midland regions on the north and east slopes. These winds could affect high-altitude roads such as those leading into the centre of the island. By the afternoon, the winds will ease and shift to a more moderate westerly direction.
Expected temperatures: Low of 20°C and a high of 25°C
TENERIFE:
Tenerife will begin the day under extensive cloud cover, with the early morning bringing moderate to very heavy thunderstorms, some of which may be persistent, especially in inland western areas. Aemet notes that other parts of the island, including the mid-altitude regions of Anaga and the northwest, may also see sudden, intense storms that could cause temporary flooding in low-lying zones.
As the day progresses, rainfall is expected to continue mainly across the north of the island, while the south, east, and west should gradually see clearer skies with increasing sunny intervals through the afternoon. Temperatures will show a slight drop in maximum values, while minimum temperatures are forecast to remain stable.
Winds, however, remain the greatest concern. Southwesterly winds increasing to moderate or strong will sweep across the island, with exposed peaks, particularly Teide National Park and high-altitude ridgelines, likely facing gusts exceeding 90 km/h. Mid-altitude areas of the south and west may also experience fierce gusts, and even the normally sheltered southeast coast may feel occasional severe bursts of wind. By the evening, winds will gradually ease and turn westerly,
Expected temperatures: Low of 19°C and a high of 24°C
La Gomera:
Early heavy rain and thunderstorms, especially on western slopes and summits, easing by late morning. Strong southwest winds will shift westwards, with very strong gusts up to 90 km/h possible in exposed areas.
Expected temperatures: Low of 21°C and a high of 24°C
La Palma:
Cloudy with early heavy and persistent thunderstorms, particularly in the west and northeast. Rain will gradually lessen throughout the day. Strong southwest winds will shift westwards, with severe gusts possible in El Paso, mid-altitude areas, and exposed parts of the Caldera de Taburiente.
Expected temperatures: Low of 20°C and a high of 24°C
El Hierro:
Cloudy early with rain and possible heavy thunderstorms in the southwest and high areas. Conditions will improve into the morning. Strong southwest winds will turn westerly, with very strong gusts expected in exposed zones.
Expected temperatures: Low of 15°C and a high of 19°C
Aemet advises all residents and visitors to stay updated on weather warnings, avoid mountainous or coastal areas during peak conditions, and follow official safety recommendations as Storm Claudia continues to sweep across the islands.
