Bathing restrictions have officially been lifted at El Reducto beach in Arrecife, Lanzarote, after health authorities confirmed that the water is now safe for swimming, after being closed since October 2025 for contamination.
The restriction had been in place following the detection of sewage discharges caused by leaks in the drainage network linked to Calle El Greco. Contamination was also identified in water tests carried out by Public Health in the Punta del Camello area, forcing the ban on safety grounds.
According to the local council, municipal technicians carried out detailed inspections, including exploratory checks in buildings along Calle El Greco. These investigations uncovered leaks in ageing infrastructure more than 60 years old, located in an area running parallel to Avenida Fred Olsen.
Repairs were subsequently carried out by the island’s water authorities, the Water Consortium and Canal Gestión, who are responsible for maintaining the sewage system. The work focused on fixing the identified leaks and preventing further contamination.
Despite water tests showing acceptable levels as early as December, Lanzarote’s Health Department had advised keeping the swimming ban in place until all faults in the system were fully repaired, ensuring no further risk to public health.
Last week, the Canary Islands’ Directorate General of Public Health received official certification from Canal Gestión confirming that all issues had been resolved. Follow-up testing by health authorities has since reaffirmed that the water quality is suitable for bathing.
The reopening of El Reducto beach comes as welcome news for both residents and visitors, visiting one of Arrecife’s most popular coastal spots.
