A naked man walking through the La Laja tunnel forced police to close the GC-1 motorway heading south from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria yesterday afternoon (Thursday), causing lengthy traffic queues.

The man was carrying a shoulder bag and entered the tunnel at around 3.30pm. All three southbound lanes were closed for approximately 30 minutes while officers dealt with the incident.

Guardia Civil traffic officers removed the man from the motorway and took him to a place of safety. Police are investigating whether any further action should be taken.

The tunnel reopened once the road was clear. No collisions or injuries were reported during the closure.

Traffic was also disrupted elsewhere on the GC-1 on Thursday following a multi-vehicle collision near Bocabarranco in Telde. That incident affected traffic heading towards Las Palmas and caused further queues.
