Rain eases across the Canary Islands this bank holiday Sunday

The Canary Islands are expecting an improvement in weather conditions today, Sunday 11th October, although occasional rain showers remain possible across several islands as the bank holiday weekend continues.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), rainfall is expected to become generally lighter and more scattered, with the greatest chance of showers during the early hours and morning.

Temperatures will remain relatively mild, with maximums reaching approximately 26–27°C in most parts of the archipelago, however, the Canary Islands Government's rain pre-alert, introduced on Friday, remains in place according to the latest available official information.

TENERIFE:
Cloud and showers in the north, brighter in the south

Northern and northeastern Tenerife will experience cloudy conditions this morning, with occasional light rain particularly likely in mid-altitude areas. Cloud cover is expected to break up at times as the day progresses.

Southern and western coastal areas, including the main tourist resorts, should experience generally brighter conditions, although some cloud may develop during the afternoon and an isolated shower cannot be ruled out.

Temperatures are forecast to reach approximately 27°C, with moderate northeasterly winds.

GRAN CANARIA:
Morning rain followed by brighter intervals

Northern Gran Canaria is expected to see cloudy skies with occasional light rain during the morning, with another possibility of showers later in the day. Brighter intervals should develop around midday as the cloud breaks up.

Southern and inland areas will generally experience more favourable conditions, although afternoon cloud development could produce an isolated shower.

Temperatures are expected to reach approximately 26°C, with light to moderate northerly winds.

LANZAROTE:
Early showers giving way to brighter weather

Lanzarote will experience variable cloud cover throughout the day, with thicker cloud possible in western areas.

Occasional light rainfall is possible during the early hours, but conditions are expected to become generally drier as the day progresses.

Temperatures could reach 27°C, with light to moderate northerly winds.

The forecast suggests a less unsettled day than the conditions experienced earlier in the weekend.

FUERTEVENTURA:
Improving conditions during the afternoon

Fuerteventura is forecast to experience cloudy intervals during the morning, with a possibility of isolated light rain overnight and during the early hours.

However, cloud cover is expected to decrease during the afternoon, allowing longer sunny intervals across the island.

Temperatures are forecast to reach 26°C, with generally light to moderate northerly winds.

Conditions should become more favourable for outdoor activities as the day progresses.

Rain pre-alert remains in place

The Canary Islands Government declared a rain pre-alert on Friday (9th October) covering Lanzarote, La Graciosa, Fuerteventura, and northern areas of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The measure was introduced because of the possibility of locally heavy and scattered showers, potentially accompanied by isolated thunderstorms.

The original emergency forecast warned that rainfall could reach or exceed 15 litres per square metre in one hour, particularly in the eastern islands.

Although today's forecast suggests an improvement, the latest available official information has not confirmed that the pre-alert has been lifted.

Residents and holidaymakers should therefore remain aware of changing local conditions, particularly when travelling through mountainous areas or visiting locations susceptible to flooding.

Outlook Bank Holiday Monday

Monday 12th October is Spain's National Day, a public holiday across the Canary Islands.

Weather conditions are expected to become generally more settled, although cloud and occasional isolated showers may still affect some areas.

For visitors planning beach days, excursions or outdoor events, conditions are expected to be more favourable than during the earlier part of the weekend.

However, the public should continue checking local forecasts and official weather notices, as conditions can vary considerably between the north and south of individual islands.
