The Guardia Civil have arrested a suspect following a bizarre burglary at a shop in Corralejo, Fuerteventura, in which the thief reportedly wore a Batman mask to hide his identity.

According to the Guardia Civil, the break-in took place during the early hours of 12th August when the suspect allegedly gained entry to the premises by smashing the glass in the entrance door before stealing the shop's cash register, which contained approximately €500.

The burglary also caused considerable damage to the premises, initially estimated at around €750.

Batman mask caught on CCTV

Security camera footage proved crucial to the investigation. Officers reviewing the recordings spotted the alleged burglar with their face concealed behind a mask of the comic-book superhero Batman.

The person was also seen wearing distinctive clothing, including black boots, ochre-coloured trousers and a black hooded sweatshirt.

Investigators subsequently located a suspect whose clothing matched that seen in the CCTV footage.

As the investigation progressed, the arrested person reportedly led officers to the location where the Batman mask used during the burglary had been hidden, along with a hammer allegedly used to smash the shop's windows.

Cash register and money recovered

The Guardia Civil also recovered the stolen cash register and €253 of the money that had been inside it.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary and brought before the duty court in Puerto del Rosario.

The investigation highlights the important role security cameras can play in identifying suspects, even when attempts are made to disguise their appearance.
