Business owners in Las Galletas, south Tenerife, have raised the alarm over a recent surge in robberies, reportedly carried out by groups of youths operating in the early hours of the morning.
According to local traders, the incidents have been going on for several weeks, with security cameras from several premises capturing young offenders targeting businesses overnight.
Shopkeepers describe the situation as “unsustainable”, with some staying awake through the night to monitor their CCTV systems.
Talking to Diario de Avisos, one business owner said insecurity in the town has worsened significantly over the past year, both during the day and at night, but has escalated sharply in recent weeks.
The wave of incidents has affected a wide range of premises, including restaurants, cafés, clothing shops, bakeries and small supermarkets, particularly those near the beach and pedestrian areas. In some cases, break-ins have been attempted but were unsuccessful.
Traders also claim the same group may be linked to thefts from homes, parked cars, and even local schools, where computer equipment has reportedly been stolen.
Calls for Increased Police Presence
Concern is growing not only in Las Galletas but also in nearby Costa del Silencio, where some believe similar incidents may be taking place, although this has not been officially confirmed.
The impact on daily life is becoming increasingly evident. “We’re now afraid to walk to our cars at night after closing,” said another shop owner. “We’re exhausted and fed up, we just want this to be addressed.”
Local business representatives are expected to meet this week to formally report the spike in crime and demand stronger security measures, particularly increased night patrols by the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local de Arona.
Frustration is mounting among both traders and residents, with some warning that protests could follow if action is not taken.
“We’re at breaking point,” one affected trader said. “We just hope the Arona Council start listening to us.”
