After years of delays and a decade of closure, renovation works have resumed at the iconic Hotel Princesa Guayarmina in Agaete, Gran Canaria. The project, led by Promociones y Construcciones Turísticas Canarias (Procontursa), aims to transform the historic property into a four-star hotel with 47 rooms, targeting rural, sports and wellness tourism.
The restoration aims to preserve the essence of the 1933 building, which is partially listed for protection. Original features such as woodwork, mouldings and the celebrated murals by artist Miró Mainou will be retained as part of the refurbishment.
During its golden era, the establishment was one of the island’s early pioneers in health tourism, benefitting from its proximity to the Los Berrazales spring. The mineral-rich waters, long believed to have therapeutic properties, positioned the area as one of the first health-tourism enclaves in the Canary Islands.
The hotel’s architecture blended traditional Canary design with early 20th-century modernist touches. At its peak, the spa attracted international visitors and film stars including Marcello Mastroianni and Sara Montiel.
Decline and Closure (1980s–2010s)
Shifts in tourism demand, investment patterns, and the rise of southern Gran Canaria’s large beach resorts gradually diminished the hotel’s prominence.
By the 2010s, with significant structural deterioration and outdated facilities, the Princesa Guayarmina closed. It remained inactive for roughly a decade.

Procontursa is already experienced in the sector, operating the five-star Hotel Morasol Suites in the south of the island.
