Two people posing as tour guides without official accreditation have been identified in the north of Gran Canaria during a police inspection targeting illegal activity in the tourism and transport sectors, according to the Cuerpo General de la Policía Canaria.

The discovery was made by officers from the Monitoring and Inspection Unit, who carried out checks across popular tourist areas to detect professional irregularities. The operation forms part of a wider campaign to combat unlicensed practices and protect both visitors and the island’s tourism reputation.

In a statement, the Canarian Police highlighted that the presence of unqualified guides represents a significant risk to holidaymakers’ safety and undermines the credibility of the sector. Licensed guides undergo training to ensure they provide accurate cultural, historical, and environmental information, as well as to manage group safety and respond appropriately in emergency situations.

“The figure of the official guide has strategic importance,” a police spokesperson explained, “not only for their role in promoting the Canary Islands’ cultural and natural heritage, but also for the confidence and security they offer to visitors.”

Authorities warn that unauthorised guides often operate without insurance or safety training, leaving tourists vulnerable in the event of accidents or scams. They may also provide false or misleading information about the islands’ history and landmarks, damaging the authenticity of the visitor experience and the international image of the Canaries as a well-regulated, quality destination.

The police have urged residents and visitors alike to verify that guides are properly accredited by the Canary Islands’ regional government before booking tours or excursions. Official guides must display identification and registration numbers issued by the authorities.

The operation in Gran Canaria is part of a broader series of tourism compliance checks being conducted across the archipelago as the islands continue to experience strong visitor numbers. The Canarian Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining high professional standards within the tourism industry, the backbone of the region’s economy, and ensuring that both residents and tourists enjoy safe, reliable, and transparent services.
