Passenger numbers rise at Canary Islands airports

Airports across the Canary Islands handled more than 4.24 million passengers in September, an increase of 3.8% compared to the same month last year, according to Aena. Of these, most were on commercial flights: just under 2 million passengers on domestic routes, up 5%, and 2.26 million on international flights, up 2.5%. There were also more aircraft movements, with 38,638 take-offs and landings recorded, which is an increase of almost 3%.
Aeropuerto de Gran Canaria was the busiest in the islands, with 1.18 million passengers in September, 6.2% more than last year. It was followed by Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur with 996,795 passengers, Aeropuerto de César Manrique-Lanzarote with 708,898, Aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna with 633,010 and Aeropuerto de Fuerteventura with 556,869. Passenger numbers were also up at La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, although the latter saw a small drop compared to last year.
From January to September 2025, more than 40.6 million passengers have passed through Canary Islands airports, which is a 4.9% increase on the same period last year. Domestic travel grew by 5.2%, while international travel rose by 4.8%. During this period, more than 360,000 flights were operated, and over 24,000 tonnes of cargo were transported.
Across Spain, airports in the Aena network recorded more than 30.4 million passengers in September, the highest figure ever for that month.
Between January and September 2025, 247.1 million passengers travelled through Spanish airports, a 3.9% increase compared to last year.
The Canary Islands remain one of the busiest destinations in Spain’s air network, with steady growth in both domestic and international travel.
