A man was killed yesterday, Saturday, after crashing into the sea while paragliding near the El Lago Martiánez natural pools of Puerto de la Cruz, in northern Tenerife.
The tragic incident occurred at around 3:30pm, which is when the Canary Islands' Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert from a lifeguard who reported that a paraglider had crashed into the water.
Emergency services were swiftly mobilised and the Local Police were first to arrive at the scene, followed by a GES rescue helicopter, which, supported by firefighters, gave the injured paraglider CPR and extracted him from the water and transported him to the side of the harbour.
There, SUC medical teams, equipped with an advanced life support ambulance and a basic life support unit, continued both basic and advanced CPR procedures. Sadly, despite all efforts, the man was declared dead at the scene.
Maritime Rescue also deployed a jet ski in an attempt to recover the paraglider wing, which remained adrift at sea.
In addition to the emergency response teams, National Police and Guardia Civil officers were present, and have taken over the investigation and are leading the official proceedings, including guarding the body until the judicial authorities gave permission for it to be removed.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
