A Guardia Civil officer has been hailed for his bravery after rescuing a swimmer in distress off the coast of Tazacorte beach on the island of La Palma.
The dramatic rescue happened while the officer was off duty and spending time with his family. He spotted a man who had fallen from a kayak into dangerous waters, ignoring warning calls from the shore. Red flags were flying at the time, signalling hazardous sea conditions.
Realising the urgency of the situation, the officer immediately dove into the water. On reaching the kayaker, he found the man was unresponsive, face down in the water and showing no signs of movement or reaction.
The officer quickly secured the man, holding him afloat using the kayak for support. A second beachgoer swam out to assist, and together they were able to lift the unconscious man back onto the kayak.
Having received an alert, the emergency services were dispatched, including a rescue helicopter. However, despite the rough conditions, those involved managed to bring the man safely back to shore at Puerto de Tazacorte, where paramedics were waiting to treat him at the scene. Medical staff believe the man may have lost consciousness while at sea.
He was later taken to hospital in Santa Cruz de La Palma, where he is being treated for hypothermia and remains under medical supervision.
The authorities have praised the officer’s quick response and selfless actions, which may have saved the man’s life.
